17th September 2016

Luke Morris

2.25 Catterick – Shabeeh 6/4
He bumped into a very good Frankel at Goodwood last time and this looks an easier task compared to that. At the same time he’s still taking on a 92-rated rival in Tibr and he’s going to have to prove to be pretty smart to win. Hopefully he’ll be bang there and can find that bit of improvement to get his head in front.

★★★★
3.00 Catterick – Law Power 11/2
He’s been slightly disappointing. He ran well at Newcastle two runs back despite jumping a bit sluggish, but the last day we felt he’d run really well and he he didn’t. We’re back a furlong in trip so I’ll look to ride him positively and hopefully he’ll show a bit more with the blinkers on for the first time.

★★★☆☆
3.35 Catterick – Xenon 9/1
She’s been very disappointing. She’s a sister to Krypton Factor, who was a top sprinter, so if she can get a win that’s very much job done for her and she’d be off to the paddocks. This might be one of the last chances she gets to do that. She seems to be struggling to see out her races, so we’re hoping the sharp track at Catterick might help her a bit there.

★★★☆☆
4.10 Catterick – O’Connor’s Girl 9/2
Her last start was her first since the beginning of the year and she was definitely in need of it. She doesn’t do anything quickly and stepping up in trip on the turf should play to her strengths as a thorough stayer.

★★★★
7.10 Wolverhampton – Caitie 6/1
She always runs well but struggles to get her head in front. She needs holding up and producing at the right moment to win. She’s drawn wide so we’ll be forced to drop her in and I’ll ride her for a bit of luck. Hopefully she’ll be able to get some in this race.

★★★☆☆
7.40 Wolverhampton – Starshell 8/1
He’s a nice, big horse and I think he’ll need his first start today and learn for the experience. He’ll be one to keep an eye on for the future though.

★★☆☆☆
8.10 Wolverhampton – Tenzing Norgay 9/4
He’d have a good chance in this. He’s stepping up to two miles for the first time which I think will suit, and he’s facing similar opposition to what he’s been running well against recently. Given all of that, he has to have a big chance of winning.

★★★★★
8.40 Wolverhampton – Encore Moi 6/1
He’s been slightly disappointing, but I worked him the other day and he worked really nicely with a horse who is rated a good bit higher than he is. He’s clearly got ability and has headgear on for the first time so that could help bring that improvement to the course.

★★★☆☆
9.10 Wolverhampton – Alsacienne 5/2
She’s got a big chance I think. She’s been knocking on the door and I think the switch to the all-weather is really going to be in her favour. She’s a work in progress and has been a bit of a slow burner so far, but I think she’ll go really close in this.

Ryan Moore

13:10 Newbury - City Of Joy 9/4

Took a while to get the hang of things on his debut at Sandown last month, and was always on the back foot after starting slowly. But he warmed to his task well and had a nice introduction in fifth. Cost a fair bit as a yearling and still holds a Racing Post Trophy entry, and hopefully he would have learned a lot from Sandown. Has a decent chance if progressing as expected, though there are some well-bred newcomers in here to worry about, and obviously we now have heavy ground to contend with.

★★★★
13:45 Newbury – Dartmouth 6/4

Only a small field but competitive, and Dartmouth's 5lb penalty for his Hardwicke win makes life tougher, and he would want better ground, too. He has never raced on anything this soft. But the merit of that Ascot defeat of Highland Reel is there for all to see. He probably didn't quite run up to that level when third in the King George last time, where he never really got into the race, but he is versatile tactics-wise and is the class horse of the race on current form, especially with The Grey Gatsby now a non-runner.
★★★★

14:15 Newbury - Legendary Lunch 3/1

He really surprised me when finishing an excellent second to a back-to-form Ardad in the Flying Childers last time, and he could well have won had he been drawn higher and not had to make his run on the outside. If he shows up in the same form over this extra furlong, and we know he gets 6f, then he clearly has a fair chance. Gimcrack runner-up Mokarris looks the horse to beat, but the ground could have gone against him.

★★★★
14:50 Newbury – Autocratic 6/1

This looks a very open and competitive handicap, but hopefully I have as good a chance as any on Autocratic. I was impressed with him when he won his Sandown maiden and he was unlucky to bump into an-song Ode To Evening at Newmarket last time, as that horse was very well-handicapped if back to his best. The winner went on to finish an excellent second to You're Hired at Goodwood, and we pulled two lengths clear of the third at Newmarket, so I think we can be competitive off a 5lb higher mark here. And hopefully there is more to come from this lightly-raced 3yo but, once again, the ground is the worry. His improvement has come on fast ground.
★★★☆☆
16:00 Newbury - Graphite Storm 13/2

Clearly improved a ton for his Ascot debut when winning on fast ground at Windsor last time. I am not totally sure about the strength of the form but the runner-up had decent maiden form going into the race, and Graphite Storm certainly looked as though this extra furlong would certainly suit at Windsor. A mark of 80 may not be overly-generous but, like most of these, he is unexposed, so it is a matter of who improves the most as they gain experience and copes with the conditions best.
★★★☆☆
16:35 Newbury – Aflame 7/2
This will be the first time I have ridden her but she looks to be progressing well. She has gone up 10lb for a couple of fast-ground wins over 7f at Yarmouth and this looks a far tougher race with some more depth, but she is off the ceiling mark in this 0-80 handicap, and that is a positive, as is the fact that this well-bred filly is going forwards. She would have preferred it to remain on the quick side.
★★★☆☆
17:05 Newbury - Crystal Ocean 5/2
Has some nice entries and is a lovely colt, and a well-bred one, too, from an excellent family. He is a Sea The Stars half-brother to the likes of Hillstar and he is a horse we like. A few of the boss's two-year-olds have won first time out this season but, as ever, we like to give the newcomers a good introduction to racing. If they are good enough to win, that's great, and he may be. We will see.
★★★★

Daniel Tudhope

2:35 Ayr – Intisaab 8/2
He has had six starts this season, won twice at Ayr and been second in his other four races, including when chasing home Kimbrella in the Skybet Dash at York at the end of July.
In contrast to Watchable, we are drawn in the middle this time, in stall 13.
His last run was another good one as recently as last Sunday when he finished second at The Curragh in a handicap on Longines Irish Champions Weekend, beaten by New Bidder also trained in Yorkshire by David Barron.
★★★☆☆
3:45 Ayr – Watchable 25/1
Naturally, I would dearly love to win an Ayr Gold Cup as a proud Scot and my ride tomorrow, Watchable, will have to win it from stall 3.
He was the penultimate horse drawn in the televised barrier draw, and I see we have Nameitwhatyoulike, who won the Betfred Garrowby Stakes, the Listed feature of the last meeting at York earlier this month, alongside in the stalls.
Watchable does not win very often but he is in very good form, is tough and consistent. He was promoted to third place in a rough Group Two at Baden-Baden in Germany last time.
Before that, he was placed in two Listed Races and a Group Three and we even took him to Longchamp, although I rode stablemate Move in Time, for last year’s Group One Prix de L’Abbaye.
The draw is what it is, but, to be honest, I would rather be drawn closer to a rail than in the middle but time alone will tell if we are on the right side.
He has been aimed high and he is good enough to run a big race.
★★★☆☆

Hugo Palmer

14:50 Newbury – Baydar 8/1

He doesn't want rattling, quick summer ground, and he certainly isn't going to get that now after Thursday night's deluge made it heavy.

He won on a fast surface at Newmarket but there was no sting in the ground there. I walked the course beforehand and they had put plenty of water on. He has won on good to soft, but quite clearly these are now going to be completely different conditions. I think he simply wants nice, good ground, but he did run very well to finish second to a good horse in bottomless ground at Haydock on his debut - it was softer than advertised - and it's a valuable prize and it makes sense to find out if he can handle the conditions.

He is nicely drawn, too. He has gone up 4lb for his Sandown win, which is okay. That equates to about 0.6 seconds and I don't think that is a great deal to find over 1m2f. I think Newbury will suit him, too.

★★★☆☆

16:20 Ayr - They Seek Him Here 9/1

Had an operation for an entrapped epiglottis before his comeback run at Chepstow. On the face of it he didn't run that well - and he didn't blow afterwards, so he was pretty straight there - but it told us that he probably wants 1m2f and softer ground, which hopefully he will get here. He has also been dropped 3lb from Chepstow, which obviously allows him to get into this 0-100.
★★★☆☆

Richard Fahey

2:35 Ayr – George Bowen 12/1
Tony Hamilton felt he should have won on George Bowen in Ireland last time and he was only just beaten in this last year. We know track and ground are perfect for him here and again he'd have his chance.
★★★★
3:45 Ayr – Growl 11/2
We were lucky enough to win the William Hill Ayr Gold Cup with Don't Touch last season and have the favourite for this year's race with Growl. I wouldn't be as confident as I was 12 months ago when we expected to win but he must have a rock solid chance.
There aren't many potential improvers in against him and while the price looks quite skinny, he has a bit of pace around him in stall six and is in great form at home. I couldn't be happier with him and I just hope he gets a bit of luck.
★★★★
5:55 Catterick – Desire 13/2
Our final runner is Desire in the first division of the Book Now For Saturday 15th October Handicap at Catterick. She's been running better of late and is entitled to run a good race here.
★★★☆☆

Silvestre De Sousa

2:25 Catterick – Tibr 1/1
My best chance may well come in the opening novice with Ed Dunlop’s Tibr. I won on him on his debut so am looking forward to riding him again.
He hasn’t won since, but he’s been contesting some hot races. On ratings he should have a decent shout and Mark Johnston’s Shabeeh looks like his main danger.
★★★★
3:00 Catterick – Tailors Row 7/2
I’ve got three rides for Mark at Catterick and the first is on Tailor’s Row in the seven furlong nursery Similarly to Tibr, he won on his debut and has been beaten on his next three starts.
His form is pretty good for this level, though, and I’d be hopeful he can run a nice race.
★★★★
3:35 Catterick – Apamurra 9/2
Apamurra hasn’t got her head in front yet, but she has a chance to in her first start in handicap company in the five furlong nursery.
She started favourite on her first two starts over the minimum trip without winning and I hope she’ll be competitive in what looks a very open race.
★★★★

4:10 Catterick – Isharah 4/1
Isharah is taking on his elders in the 1m 6f handicap and he should appreciate the step up in distance as he was running on well over 1m 4f at Ffos Las last time.
It’s quite a good time of year for the three-year-olds to have a crack against the older horses as they have grown and strengthened up over the summer.
This doesn’t look the greatest of races so he should be in with a fair each-way chance.
★★★☆☆
4:45 Catterick – Hubertas 11/4
Hubertas has to carry top weight in the Class 2 handicap but he deserves that as he’s been very consistent this season.
He won the Amateur Derby at Epsom last time and he’s definitely a ride I’m looking forward to. He’s finished second on both his starts at Catterick so let’s hope we can go one better.
★★★★
5:20 Catterick – Masarzain 5/2
I’m on Masarzain for Owen Burrows and Sheikh Hamdan in the seven furlong maiden.
This is his fourth career start but he ran a respectable race on his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket in July to finish fourth.
You never know who you’re taking on in these races so it’s difficult to be confident. However, my horse has the advantage of experience which could give him the edge over his rivals
★★★☆☆
5:55 Catterick – Coolcalmcollected 7/2
The first division of the seven furlong handicap looks absolutely wide open.
At this level horses don’t win often, but Coolcalmcollected’s last two efforts have been pretty solid. She looks to have decent each-way claims.
★★★☆☆
6:25 Catterick – Disclosure 6/1
My final ride of a busy day is on Disclosure in the second division and again, it’s very hard to split the field.
I’m actually one from one on Disclosure as I won on him last summer at Doncaster. He’s now a few pounds below that mark and it would be nice to end the day with a winner.
